Visit to Nelson Lighthouse

In May 2007 Room 2 made a visit to Nelson Lighthouse located on the boulder bank. The local charter vessel "Bar-B-Cruise " transported the class from the Nelson wharf. We were lucky that it was a lovely day and the boat ride was very pleasant. Many thanks to Jason our skipper for his services. After arriving at the lighthouse some time was spent viewing the historic photos displayed on the ground level. We then headed up to the light to enjoy the view along the boulder bank before moving back outside for lunch.
The children then spent some time exploring their surrounds and appreciating the local coastal environment. As you can see from the photos below some interesting finds were made!

On the trip back to the wharf we were treated to a tour of Nelson Port and watched ships being loaded and unloaded of their cargo. It was great that the children could witness the machinery working at close quarters.

This trip reinforced messages that the children had learned during 'Bookweek' when we focused on books written by Ronda and David Armitage about the lighthouse keeper.
